The new-look BBC iPlayer

The new-look BBC iPlayer

The BBC has unveiled the latest version of the iPlayer video-on-demand service, a customisable upgrade that includes deals with Facebook and Twitter allowing users to share content via the social media networks.

Broadcasters including ITV, Channel 4 and Channel Five will also benefit from iPlayer's user traffic for the first time, with the service offering links through to the VoD players of commercial rivals.

The tie-up with Facebook and Twitter, which will allow iPlayer users to recommend programming to their friends as long as they log into the BBC website first, forms part of a strategy to make the service more social.

However, users will have to sign up to the BBC's own website ID service, already used for posting comments on the site, so that the corporation can maintain a "complete social eco-system" with iPlayer users. The corporation has more than one million users already signed up to BBC ID.

Huggers stressed that this was not the first step in turning the BBC iPlayer into a full social networking website.

"Does the BBC need to build its own social network? I think the answer is no. We want to integrate with other services," he said.

The new version of the iPlayer, which goes live in a beta testing version from today, will see the channel icons of rival broadcasters appear in the online electronic programming guide alongside the BBC's own TV services.

In addition, rivals' shows will appear if a non-BBC programme, such as "Coronation Street", is entered into the iPlayer's search engine and can be added to an constantly updated favourites list of content.

Deals have been struck with the ITV Player, Channel 4's 4oD, Five's Five on Demand, S4C's Clic and the VoD aggregation service SeeSaw.

The new links to commercial rivals will go live on the iPlayer service later this year. The deals with rival broadcasters will not see the sharing of content or technology.

Erik Huggers, the director of future, media and technology at the BBC, said that there was "no particular reason" that BSkyB's Sky Player was not one of the launch partners.

"It is an open programme, if Sky wants to be part of this it is no particular problem. They are considering it," Huggers added.

The partnerships form part of the BBC's pledge in the strategic review of online activities to be more of a "window on the web" and double the number of clickthroughs to rivals' websites from 10m to 20m per month.

Huggers said that one reason that director general Mark Thompson's original plan to form partnerships with commercial broadcasters using the iPlayer, which fell apart last year, failed was because it involved the sharing of BBC technology.

The BBC has also struck a deal with Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger chat service so that iPlayer users can message each other at the same time as watching shows.

Huggers said that the iPlayer, which was previously criticised for not launching products simultaneously on multiple technology platforms, was in "exploratory discussions" with operators of other chat services including Google and Facebook.

"The fact we chose Microsoft [first] was because they have the largest installed base [of users]," he added.

The Sci-fi Short Hollywood Wants To Turn Into A Movie

Via http://www.heatvisionblog.com/2010/04/the-scifi-short-hollywood-wants-to-turn...

'Commercial director Carl Erik Rinsch was to have made his directorial debut with the "Alien" prequel. But since that didn't happen, he took part in electronic giant Phillips' short-film experiment, which allowed five filmmakers to make their own movie using the same piece of dialogue.

Rinsch came up with "The Gift," a melange of Bourne-with-a-robot, a unicorn Macguffin and a futuristic Moscow-as-police-state setting (oh, wait, that is already here).

On Wednesday, the day the short came out, a bidding war broke out between several studios -- longtime rivals Warner Bros. and Fox are in the mix, according to sources -- who see feature potential in the short. Some speculate the project will end up at Fox, because Rinsch is part of the stable of RSA, Ridley Scott's commercial house that produced the short, and Scott's longtime association with Fox.

"Gift" is the latest short to grab Hollywood's attention. In November, Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez unleashed "Panic Attack!" which led to him getting representation and a film deal with Sam Raimi's Ghost House production company. However, while "Panic" had the town interested in a fresh talent and the ability to make high quality/low budget sci-fi, Rinsch is more established, and "Gift" has tongues wagging for its story and aesthetic.'

Here is a link to 'Panic Attack!' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dadPWhEhVk&feature=player_embedded

With its brilliant CGI and interesting plot, no wonder Hollywood want to make it into a movie! It just goes to show, a unique idea posted in the right places might even get you into Hollywood!

Designed by IBM, this colour sensitive billboard can change colour depending on what colours it sees in front of it. Using a small camera, it detects the colours which it then uses to change the display. This makes each passer-by's experience unique.

Waterstone's Re-brand

Waterstone's has recently introduced their new logo this week. The first stores to display this new logo including Picadilly, Deansgate and Nottingham.

Say goodbye to the serifs and hello to the sans and some logo variations...

According to TheBookSellers.com article, HMV (Waterstone's parent company) has apparently driven the re-brand and worked with its standard branding agency, venturethree.

Some have said 'it does look rather like an upturned HMV (sorry, hmv) "m" though.' but, I'm actually liking the new change. In the way that McDonald's has grabbed the 'M,' Waterstone's are trying to big-up their 'w' to improve business.

The only thing to ask is will this help them sell more books? They now have hundreds of stores in need of new POS displays and this most defiantly won't be a cheap change!

Early last month I went to visit the Nottingham Contemporary for the Star City Exhibition. Here were some of the images that were displayed there. These images were a collection of some iconic religious images merged with images of space travel, astronauts and planets. It was a creative combination of past and future.

20ten What the Frock?

OK, first of all, I've been working with Empty Space, a fashion PR and communications agency in Nottingham, and have been asked to help them design their '20ten What the Frock?' website.

20ten represents the next generation of new innovative design talent from the young creative fashion designers of Nottingham Trent University. The 20ten What the Frock? degree show is a fashion show that will commence on Thursdays 20th and Friday 21st of May 2010, at 5pm and 8pm both days in the new university building Newton/Arkwright. It will showcase the fashion design student’s final collections and this year is set to be the most inspiring show yet, with guest producer Mikel Rosen fashion entrepreneur, who has produces over 200 fashion shows a year for names as diverse as John Galliano to Marks and Spencer’s from being one of the founders of London Fashion Week.

I therefore was asked to follow some design ideas they liked to create them their website which will be going live on Monday.

UKTyres Improvements

I've been really busy over the last few weeks with various projects. One of which was to add a few extra features to the UKTyres website. I'm currently converting it so that it's powered by Wordpress. There are currently a few issues that I need to sort out but it's coming along nicely.

The changes are a CSS3 navigation bar, thanks to a really good tutorial from @nickla on his Web Designer Wall, and the use of  CSS sprites, thanks to @chriscoyier and his tutorial http://css-tricks.com/css-sprites/, Using sprites improves the loading speed of pages so I'm now using just one image for the header, the 6 blue boxes and the 6 darker blue boxes for when you hover over them.
